What's more, you'll take part in the day-to-day activities of the villages and spend a few nights in the homes of local people, giving you the chance to immerse yourself in places far removed from the tourist circuits. Free day in La Paz without car or guide (hotel of our selection well located) for personal discovery.
Optional: visit to a sculptor's workshop - then walking tour of the Pedregal Canyon - tasting of organic gastronomic products from all regions of Bolivia. To finish this beautiful day, discovery on foot of the historical centre (Spanish or French speaking guide according to your choice).

Morning departure for the small town of Copacabana, nestling on the shores of Lake Titicaca (3810 m. alt.). Depart from the Copacabana pier by private motorboat for the Isla del Sol, the largest island in Lake Titicaca. From the shore, climb up to the ruins of Chincana, located at the northernmost tip of the Isla del Sol. Then, a magnificent hike along the ridges with the Cordillera Real as a backdrop. Arrive late afternoon in the village of Yumani (south of Isla del Sol).
Meals: Breakfast, picnic and dinner. Night in a hostel.
Difficulty: 4 hours' walk - +400m. -250m.

Visit to the Pilkokaina temple. Sailing to the village of Santiago de Okola. Meeting with the community. Activities with the villagers (weaving, discovering medicinal plants or cooking).

Today we share village life and have the chance to take a walk on Cerro el Dragón Dormido. Apthapi lunch. Return to La Paz in the early afternoon.

Day 6

La Paz , Luribay

Wine-growing land

Morning departure for the village of Luribay. Cross a pass at an altitude of 4,700 m before descending into the pretty Luribay valley, famous for its peach orchards. At the time of Spanish colonisation, Luribay was famous for its vineyards. All the vines were destroyed by phylloxera in the 1970s. The community we are joining has set up the "La Cabaña" association, which works with 30 grape growers. They seek to promote wine and Singani production as a way of contributing to the socio-economic development of the village. They supplement this activity (insufficient to support each family) with tourist services (sightseeing tours of the village and walks).

Day 7

Luribay

Sharing and tasting

Visit the village and talk to the locals about their history and customs. Walk to the Calvary overlooking the village. Then visit the Bodega and taste the "home-made" wine! Visit the vineyards and orchards accompanied by all the villagers! Everyone brings their own experience, and presents their land and their production. There's also an old hacienda in the village, which survived the 1978 flood and is a veritable museum.

Luribay, Uyuni

Morning departure for the Altiplano and the road to Uyuni. The track replaces the asphalt as far as Uyuni.

Day 9

Uyuni, Villamar

Morning departure for the Lipez region. Visit to the train cemetery on the outskirts of the town. Drive through San Cristobal, a village relocated following the arrival of a mining company. A little anecdote: its church has been rebuilt stone by stone at a cost of almost half a million dollars. Discover the Valley of the Rocks and arrive in the village of Villamar in the late afternoon.

Day 10

Villamar, Lagunas

Laguna Verde and Colorada

Laguna Verde and Colorada

Initially, the track runs alongside the Salar de Capina, exploited for its borax. Then the Laguna Colorada comes into view. You'll need to take a long break to admire this exceptional lagoon, home to numerous colonies of pink flamingos. Today's altitude is 5,000 metres! Stop at "Sol de Mañana", then the trail continues to the Polques thermal baths. The more courageous can enjoy a bath with a view of the Laguna Chalviri. We skirt the border with Chile and on the way, the Dali Desert with its supernatural landscapes! Arrive in the early afternoon at the surprising Laguna Verde, dominated by the Licancabur volcano. Return in the afternoon to the Laguna Colorada via its western slope. Possibility of a walk around the Laguna.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Overnight in a refuge (very basic comfort, sleeping bag compulsory).

A thousand and one landscapes

Continuing northwards. A short stop for a last look at the Laguna Colorada. The track becomes less tortuous as you pass through the Siloli Desert. This desert features numerous geomorphological formations, including the famous "stone tree". The surrounding landscape is fascinating, with its multicoloured mountains. Then the "1001 Lagoons" route, through a succession of lakes (Honda, Ch'arkota, Hedionda and Cañapa), some of which are home to colonies of pink flamingos... Each landscape brings its own eclectic facets. Further on, a break to stretch your legs and contemplate the Ollagë and Tomasamil volcanoes. Crossing the Salar de Chiguana brings this magnificent day to a close. Arrive in the village of San Juan de Rosario in the late afternoon. If time permits, visit the site of pre-Incan mummies and the village's small museum.

Day devoted to discovering the Salar d'Uyuni. Visit to Incahuasi Island, with its countless giant cacti. In the afternoon, visit the Colchani salt works. Return to Uyuni in the afternoon.

Departure for Uyuni airport. Flight to La Paz. Reception at La Paz airport and departure for the Cordillera Real and the community of Qala Uta. Departure by 4×4 by road and then by track to the Santos refuge (4400 m. alt.) in the heart of the Cordillera Royale. Crossing the Mollo pass (5000 m. alt.) at the foot of the Wila Lluxita glacier. The "Qala Uta" project was launched at the beginning of 2002 by a group of families from the communities of Uma Palca and Challana. Its members decided to share their knowledge of the mountains with visitors and to introduce them to their Aymara culture. Activities include an introduction to weaving techniques, a visit to the school and traditional cooking. The site also offers rock climbing (levels 5 to 7).

Hike: down to the river before ascending into the Wilallojje valley. Follow the path through the rocks to reach the pass. There is a beautiful view of the Tres Picos lagoon or Kunuijitinta ("avalanche" in Aymara), located at the foot of the Tres Picos glacier. We continue along a contour to reach this beautiful lagoon, where we have lunch. We then descend to the Khota Pata lagoon along a steep path. Here we can try our hand at fishing for dinner. It takes 2 hours to return to the refuge from the lagoon.

Difficulty: 6 hours' walk - +690m. -690m.

Climate and equipment

The climate varies from region to region: in the Altiplano, the high altitude means that temperatures are very cold at night during the dry season, between May and October, but fairly mild during the day.
The eastern plains can experience torrid periods during the wet season, between November and March. Flash floods occur almost everywhere in the wet season.
The best time to travel is during the dry season (May to October).
Be sure to bring special cold-weather gear, including duvets.
Difficulties :
2 long hikes, the rest of the time no major difficulties, apart from the altitude (possibility of changing the days of the hikes for other visits or activities).

Compulsory vaccinations: yellow fever - hepatitis A.

A magnificent programme but tough conditions. This trip requires excellent physical condition (hiking and altitude), a minimum of preparation and the right equipment.
