Climate and equipment

Peru is in the southern hemisphere and there are 2 seasons: winter from April to November: this is the dry season. Summer from December to March: the rainy season
1/ The climate in Peru Peru stretches over 2700km, hence a wide variety of climates:
 desert on the coast (Trujillo, Lima, Paracas, Nazca): temperatures rarely fall below 15°C. However, the air can be saturated with humidity, which makes it feel cold in winter and hot in summer.
 dry Mediterranean around 2000m (Arequipa),
 tropical mountain in the centre (Cusco, Puno, Huaraz): the temperature differences can be very high between day and night. During the day it can be 20-30°C and at night 0-5°C, even negative in winter. Don't forget that the sun can burn above 3000m.
 tropical humid in the Amazon (Puerto Maldonado, Iquitos): there are high temperatures of about 30-35°C and frequent showers throughout the year.

2/ The best season for a trip to Peru The best season to travel to Peru is from April to November as it is the dry season.
3/ How to dress ...
Dry season (winter) The dry season is generally the most recommended for travel. On the other hand, it is also the coldest, with temperatures dropping below 0˚C at night.
Lima: very humid fog, grey skies. July and August are the coldest months (warm clothes)
Puno and Cusco (Andes): dry, sunny days and cold nights (warm clothes)
Puerto Maldonado and Iquitos (Jungle): dry, very hot during the day and night. On the other hand, there is a meteorological phenomenon called "friajes" which involves cold winds from Patagonia, and which can lower the temperature to 8˚C (light and warm clothing)

Health

Be in possession of a certificate of good physical health.
The Peruvian state does not require any mandatory vaccination. It is advisable to have your standard vaccinations up to date. If you are planning a trip to the Amazon, a yellow fever vaccination is recommended.
The altitude sickness "the Soroche": above 2500 meters, you may feel the altitude sickness. You will need half a day to adapt. During the first few days, avoid prolonged exertion, drink plenty of water and eat lightly. To mitigate the effects, you can take glucose, sugar or a coca mate infusion. For those who are more sensitive, do not hesitate to consult your general practitioner.
A few essential rules of hygiene remain the best protection against disease: drink bottled water, avoid raw vegetables and unpeeled fruit, avoid swimming in fresh water and walking barefoot in muddy water. These few rules will also help you avoid the risk of amoebiasis.
Also take aspirin, bandages, and medication for intestinal problems (Intetrix, Immodium, etc.) in your travel kit. Mosquitoes are present all year round in the Amazon area; take effective anti-mosquito cream and sun protection products.
